VIN mistakes or transposed characters
EIN and business name control mismatch
Using an EIN that is not yet active in IRS systems
Incorrect First Used Month or taxable gross weight selection
Duplicate filing for the same vehicle and period
Payment-related data entry issues
These are typically straightforward to fix. Once corrected, most refiles are accepted quickly.
The IRS treats a rejected e-file as not filed. That means penalties and interest can apply if an accepted filing is not on record by the due date. For most taxpayers, Form 2290 is due by the last day of the month following the vehicle's First Used Month. For example, vehicles first used in July are generally due by August 31.
If your initial e-file was submitted by the due date but rejected, correct and retransmit as soon as possible. The faster you refile, the lower your compliance risk. Acceptance timing is determined by the IRS, so prompt correction is essential. For official rules and definitions, refer to the IRS Instructions for Form 2290 at irs.gov/instructions/i2290.

Correct the data. For VINs, verify all 17 characters. For EIN mismatches, confirm your business name control exactly as it appears on your IRS EIN notice. If your EIN is new, allow time for IRS activation.
If your correction changes tax due, our system recalculates automatically. Confirm or update your payment method as required by the IRS.
Re-submit to the IRS. You will see a confirmation on screen that you refiled the rejected return free, with no additional filing charge for that return.
Watch for status updates. Most decisions arrive in minutes, although IRS processing can vary. If accepted, your Schedule 1 is available immediately.
If the IRS rejects again, repeat the correction steps and refile at no added filing cost. You can also contact our support team for free help for rejected tax return questions.
